Expectations of Dog Breeder Directory Advertisers
Advertisers must:
- Supply a bill of sale to every purchaser.
- Supply either a Written Statement of Health At The Time Of Sale or a Written HealthGuarantee/ Warranty with each sale.
Advertisers should:
- Have an established breeding program, not just a single stud dog and/or brood bitch.
- Maintain proper sanitary conditions in their kennel
- Be members of a specialty or all-breed club.
- Be exhibitors at AKC or UKC events.
- Practice needed health screening applicable for their particular breed. Public stud dogs should be properly maintained with appropriate health screening (ex. Brucellosis tests, OFA Certification, ACVO eye checks, etc.) Brood bitches should be bred with the intent to preserve the breed and keep it healthy.
- If a member of a club with a "Code of Ethics," be familiar with their Code
and have a copy on hand at all times. - Enthusiastically assist persons who have problems or questions pertaining to a dog
acquired from that advertiser.
Attention Dog Buyers
In accordance with guidelines established by the American Kennel Club, all AAKC Dog
Breeder Directory Advertisers are required to include with each puppy or dog sale (companion pet or show):
- A Bill of Sale
A bill of sale is a receipt (preprinted or handwritten) which identifies the puppy being sold, states the fee paid for the dog and any additional terms.
- A Statement of Health
A Statement of Health is a declaration the puppy or adult being sold is health at the time of sale. This statement can be composed by the advertisier or their veterinarian and must also include recourse in the event the puppy or dog is not healthy at time of sale.
OR
- A Written Health Guarantee/Warranty
A “guarantee” or “warranty” includes a written statement of health at the time of sale and additional buyer protection against congenital problems, inherited defects, etc. The health guarantee should also include how a defect is determined and the procedure the breeder and purchaser are expected to follow in the event sold puppy/adult is diagnosed with a defect. Perspective new owners are advised to read any sales contracts and guarantees carefully before purchase.
The Ann Arbor Kennel Club is in no way responsible for any agreements, written or verbal, between the enclosed breeders and purchasers. The listing of any Club or individual advertiser in the Directory does not denote an endorsement of that club or person or any of the documents used in the sale process by the Ann Arbor Kennel Club, its Board of Directors or its members.
